Finding the Right Afterschool Fit: A Parent’s Guide

The school bell rings at 3pm, but for most families, the day is far from over. Afterschool hours are a big part of a child’s week. It’s a time for homework, friendships, snacks, and everything in between. Choosing the right program for your family can feel like a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming one. Every community offers a different range of options, and not every family has an unlimited number to choose from. Wherever you’re starting, this guide can help you ask the right questions, know what to look for, and feel confident in the decision you make.

At the Connecticut Network for Children and Youth (The Network), we work alongside afterschool providers across the state every day. We’ve seen firsthand how much care and intention goes into these programs, and how different each one can be. The “best” program isn’t the same for every family; it’s the one that fits your child, your schedule, and what matters most to you.

Keep these things in mind as you explore your options.

Start with what your child needs

Every kid is different. Some children want to run around and burn off energy after a day of sitting still. Others are looking for a quiet space to finish homework or dive into a favorite hobby. Afterschool time can also be the perfect opportunity to try something new — a sport, the arts, technology, or a skill they haven’t had the chance to explore yet.  Think about what would make your child feel excited to go, not just what fills the hours.

Ask about the day-to-day rhythm

A quick conversation with program staff can tell you a lot. Ask what a typical afternoon looks like: Is there a mix of structured activities and free time? How is homework time handled? What happens on early-release or no-school days? Do they offer a sibling discount? Programs vary widely, and knowing the daily flow helps you picture your child there.

Look for connection, not just supervision

Great afterschool programs are about more than a safe place to wait for pickup. Ask how staff build relationships with kids, how they handle conflicts between children, and how they communicate with families. A program where your child is known and looked forward to seeing staff each day makes a real difference.

Consider logistics honestly

Location, hours, and cost matter just as much as programming. A wonderful program that doesn’t fit your family’s schedule or budget won’t work long-term. As you compare options, ask providers directly about pricing and payment schedules so you know what to expect before you commit.

Trust your gut — and visit if you can

Numbers and brochures only tell part of the story. If possible, visit in person, watch how staff interact with kids, and notice the overall feel of the space. Does it feel warm? Organized? Like somewhere your child would want to be? Is the staff engaging with the kids? Do the kids look like they are enjoying their time?
